Heart disease is the number one killer of men in the United States. However, many people don’t know that anxiety can be a major contributor to heart problems in men.
Anxiety is a normal emotion that everyone experiences at some point in their life. However, when anxiety becomes chronic, it can take a toll on your physical and mental health. Chronic anxiety is literally a killer.
In this blog post, I will discuss the link between anxiety and heart disease. I will also provide tips for reducing your anxiety, and with it your risk of experiencing cardiac issues.
The Science linking Anxiety and Heart Disease
The February 2022 issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association included the results of a study that started in 1975 and followed the mental and heart health of 1,561 men. After monitoring the men for nearly 23 years, researchers concluded that having higher levels of worry or anxiety resulted in a 10% to 13% higher risk of developing heart disease, stroke, or type 2 diabetes.
While the study couldn’t say for certain that anxiety caused heart disease, the link between the two is undeniable. And this isn’t the only study linking anxiety and heart problems in men. A 2012 meta-analysis of 14 studies found a significant link between anxiety disorders and an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
So what is it about anxiety that seems to predispose men to heart disease?
There are a few possible explanations. First, anxiety can lead to unhealthy behaviors like smoking and excessive drinking. Second, chronic anxiety can cause sleep problems, which has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Finally, anxiety can increase inflammation throughout the body, and inflammation is a known risk factor for heart disease.
