A recent study published by the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading has shown that Vitamin B6 can reduce anxiety and depression. The study, which involved more than 300 participants, found that Vitamin B6 increases the body’s production of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), a chemical that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain. This helps to calm the mind and reduces feelings of anxiety or depression.
What is Vitamin B6?
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that is found in many foods, including meats, fish, poultry, whole grains, legumes, and fortified cereals. It is also available in supplement form.
The recommended daily allowance for Vitamin B6 is between one and two milligrams per day.
What is Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid?
Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate nerve cell activity.
It is involved in many processes in the brain, including mood, sleep, and anxiety. GABA levels are known to be low in people with anxiety and depression.
The Study – Vitamin B6 Reduces Anxiety and Depression
The study, which was conducted by the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading, involved giving 478 young adults either a placebo, a Vitamin B6 or a Vitamin B12 supplement daily for a month.
The research found that during the course of the trial, Vitamin B12 had no effect compared to placebo, while Vitamin B6 reduced self-reported anxiety and depression,
Tests performed at the trial’s conclusion showed that those who had taken vitamin B6 supplements had higher GABA levels, confirming the theory that B6 can help decrease anxiety.
