Book Review – The Joy of Burnout by Dr Dina Glouberman

When was the last time you felt really alive? Like, so alive that you could feel your blood pumping through your veins and every nerve ending firing?

For most of us, it’s been a while.

We go through the motions day after day, checking off items on our to-do list without ever really feeling like we’re living. And then one day we hit a wall. We can’t take it anymore. Our soul is screaming for relief and we finally give in to burnout.

It’s not always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes it’s exactly what we need. It’s a chance to hit the reset button on our lives and start over again. If we’re lucky, we learn from our mistakes and come out of the experience wiser and more fulfilled than before.

Dina Glouberman tells us that burnout is an opportunity, and that when we experience it we should not fight it. She recommends that we embrace it and see where it takes us. We just might find joy in the journey.

Who is Dr Dina Glouberman?

Dr Dina Glouberman is an international psychotherapist, coach, and world renowned expert in transformational imagery. For over thirty years she has helped people from all over the world to make creative life choices and profound life changes.

She holds a BA Honours in Psychology, an MA in Clinical Psychology, a Ph.D in Social Psychology, and is a lecturer on the Faculty of the MA (Clinical) in Psychotherapy of the Tivoli Institute in Dublin. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Humanistic Psychology (Britain).

In addition to The Joy of Burnout, she has authored several other books –

The Joy of Burnout

Glouberman’s book, The Joy of Burnout, is a guide to understanding and recovering from the increasingly common experience of burnout.

The main message of the book is the fact that burnout is a sign that your soul wants you to change. It is whispering that what might have worked in the past is now no longer working, and that you have to do something about it. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

The first time I read the book I was not open to its message. I was desperately unhappy at work, bullied and harassed by a narcissistic senior manager who was making my life hell.

My soul was not whispering that I needed a change. It was SCREAMING. However I was not willing to listen. I convinced myself that if I persevered I would overcome my ‘slump.’

Of course, that is not how it worked out. A year later I returned to the book, even more exhausted and burnt out than I had been before. My spark was gone. I had nothing left to give. This time I was ready to listen.

And so my journey of self-discovery began.

If you’re feeling burnt out, The Joy of Burnout is a book that can help you understand what your soul is trying to tell you. It’s a guide to making the changes you need to make in order to find joy again.

I highly recommend it.

If you’re struggling with burnout, or if you know someone who is, pick up a copy or download it on Kindle. It’s an insightful and compassionate book that will help you make sense of what you’re going through. And who knows, it might just be the push you need to finally make some changes in your life, if you are willing to listen.
