Narcissistic Smear Campaign – how to spot it and what to do about it

What is a Narcissistic Smear Campaign?

A narcissistic smear campaign is executed by spreading lies and malicious content about the victim.

The narcissist does this either by using flying monkeys, or by posting malicious comments on social media channels or other public forums. The goal is to harass and intimidate the victim, while also discrediting, defaming, and humiliating them.

Narcissists often use this tactic to get people who know the victim to turn against them and question their motives. This isolates their target and also reduces the chances of anyone believing them if they try to talk about the abuse they are enduring. The isolation and lack of support often result in the victim losing hope and staying in the relationship with the narcissist. This is the abuser’s end goal because it guarantees a source of continuous narcissistic supply.

How to Spot a Narcissistic Smear Campaign

Narcissists are very skilled in the art of propaganda and smear campaigns. They know how to manipulate others to do their dirty work for them and are masters of the art of abuse by proxy. In addition, they are experts at exploiting people’s weaknesses, which is what makes them so dangerous.

The signs of a narcissist smear campaign can vary depending on the situation and perpetrator. However one thing is certain: they are designed to damage your reputation or that of someone you care about. Some examples of signs include subtle remarks aimed at being hurtful, voicemails and emails with false statements, or even outright defamation on public channels such as social media.

How to Deal with a Narcissistic Smear Campaign

The best way to deal with a narcissistic smear campaign is to educate yourself about the tactics that narcissists use and how to counter them. One of the most important things to remember when dealing with this type of situation is that narcissists are not interested in what you have to say. They will also feel threatened by any criticism, and are prone to resort to displays of narcissistic rage. It’s best to be firm but polite when confronting them and always remember their goal is control, not conversation.

Unfortunately, often the only thing you can do is lie low until the narcissist loses interest. Keep your friends and loved ones close, and try to ignore all the drama and the lies. It is not easy, but sometimes it is the only way to maintain your sanity.
